Students, teachers, and staff members at McCaskey High School walked out of class Friday to protest the selection of Rocky Torres as the school district’s new superintendent.
On Feb. 21, the district announced Torres as the new superintendent effective July 1, 2023, bypassing current interim Superintendent Matthew Przywara.
According to WGAL the students said they have nothing against Torres and simply believe that Przywara is the best choice for the role.
“We know he’s supported by the vast majority of the teachers because he actually listens and he recognizes what he doesn’t know and he looks to remedy that, which I think is an unusual quality in an administrator,” student Frances Brogan told WGAL.
The School District of Lancaster conducted a survey involving staff groups, families, students and community leaders ranking the three finalists for superintendent (Torres, Przywara, and Stephanie Jones). According to LNP|LancasterOnline, over 90% of respondents who filled out a survey ranking Przywara strongly recommended him as a candidate, compared to less than 40% for Torres, and almost 13% for Jones.
WGAL reports that students and staff spent about half an hour outside as part of the protest.
