The Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team backtracked on its decision to uninvite a drag group called the “trans nuns” after LA Pride threatened to pull out of the team’s homosexual/transgender pride event.
The Dodgers had initially invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to perform at the team’s Pride Night event in June. Following fan backlash, however, the team decided to uninvite the drag group, but still planned on allowing other homosexual groups at the event.
According to their website, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are “a leading-edge Order of queer and trans nuns.” The group is known to hold events on Easter wherein they mock the Christian faith.
Following the baseball team’s decision, other homosexual groups allegedly threatened to back out of the event unless the Dodgers reinvited the group.
In a May 22 Twitter post, the Dodgers publicly apologized to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and reinvited them to the event.
“After much thoughtful feedback from our diverse communities, honest conversations within the Los Angeles Dodgers organization and generous discussion with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the Los Angeles Dodgers would like to offer our sincerest apologies to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, members of the LGBTQ+ community and their friends and families,” the post said. “We have asked the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to take their place on the field at our 10th annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night on June 16th.”
The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence released a statement on their website thanking “each person and each organization that have spoken up for us.”
“A full apology and explanation was given to us by the Dodgers staff which we accept,” the statement said. “We believe the apology is sincere because the Dodgers have worked for 10 years with our community and as well they have asked us to continue an ongoing relationship with them.” The group’s website also features an advertisement for a “Trans-Tastic” soccer event aimed at children ages 8 through 16.
