The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed one death in a shooting incident in East Hempfield Township.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, East Hempfield Township Police were dispatched to the 2000 block of Swarr Run Road to respond to a reported shooting involving a domestic situation. When police arrived, the suspect, identified as Miguel Rodriguez, shot at police and then barricaded himself inside an apartment building at the Park City Apartments.
Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) arrived at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning. Rodriguez fired multiple shots from multiple weapons in the direction of the SERT team.
Attempts were made by SERT officers to communicate with the suspect. After firing multiple shots, Rodriguez opened the door and held a rifle outside the door. Rodriguez was then shot once by a SERT member in the arm and shoulder area, according to initial reports.
Rodriguez later exited the building after SERT officers deployed cannisters of tear gas in the residence. He was taken into custody at approximately 6:30 a.m. and is receiving medical treatment. He is reported to be in stable condition.
No law enforcement members were harmed.
District Attorney Adams will make a determination after the completion of the investigation on the officer’s use of deadly force.
After apprehending the suspect, police discovered a deceased adult female victim inside the residence. The victim had one gunshot wound to the head. The name of the victim has not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing.
