In a media alert released by the Lancaster County Commissioners today, a countywide ban of TikTok from all county-issued devices was announced.
According to the statement, “TikTok and other malicious cyber based systems” will be banned on all county devices.
TikTok is a short-form video hosting service owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company. The app was launched in 2016 and currently has over 1 billion worldwide users. Concerns over information security led numerous states to ban the app from state government devices.
Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons shared the media alert today via Twitter, adding, “Lancaster County gov continues to take cyber threats seriously. County departments, employees, & citizens who interact with them must be protected from hazards, including having sensitive information harvested by the Chinese Communist party.”
The ban applies to all county-issued devices, including desktops, laptops, servers, tablets, and cell phones. It also applies to all devices connected to the County of Lancaster network for the purpose of accessing County of Lancaster data or services.
