The School District of Lancaster has selected a new superintendent.
The district announced on Feb. 21 that Rocky Torres has been selected as the new district superintendent, effective July 1, 2023.
Torres has worked as a bilingual special education teacher in the New York City Department of Education and as a school administrator in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. He currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services with Seattle Public Schools. Torres earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Urban Education from Cleveland State University.
The district’s superintendent search led to three finalists: Torres, Matthew Przywara (currently the acting superintendent), and Stephanie Jones.
Damaris Rau, the previous School District of Lancaster Superintendent, resigned in July 2022. Following Rau’s resignation, Przywara stepped in as acting superintendent, the second time he has filled the role.
“The Board is extremely grateful for the leadership of Mr. Przywara,” the Board said in an announcement. “His ongoing commitment to the SDoL community has been stellar, and the Board will set aside a special time to show its appreciation more formally.”
Torres’ contract of employment will be officially approved at a March 7 Board meeting.
[Editor’s Note: Torres later withdrew his candidacy.]
