In response to a Freedom of Information request, the United Kingdom government directed attention to a dataset regarding deaths from COVID-19. The data reveals that COVID-19 deaths without preexisting conditions were extremely low, accounting for only 1.55% percent of the total 608,000 estimated deaths in England and Wales in 2020.
The dataset, provided by the Office for National Statistics (www.ons.gov.uk), uses the phrase “due to COVID-19” when referring only to deaths with an underlying cause of death as COVID-19.
The data reveals that 73,743 deaths were registered in England and Wales in 2020 with an underlying cause of death of COVID-19. Of these 73,743 registered deaths due to COVID-19, only 9,432 were deaths due to COVID-19 with no pre-existing conditions.
England and Wales had an estimated combined population of 59 million in 2020. This means that approximately 0.016% of the population died due to COVID-19 with no pre-existing conditions.
The percent drops even lower when considering age. Of the 9,432 deaths due to COVID-19 with no pre-existing conditions, only 1,557 were of people under the age of 65.
Among a population of over 59 million people, only 1,557 people under the age of 65 died due to COVID-19 with no pre-existing conditions.
