The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) has released dates for trout stocking for the 2023 trout fishing season, with the first one occurring in Lancaster County on Feb. 21.
Each year the PFBC stocks streams and lakes in Pennsylvania with trout and other fish species. This year the commission plans to stock over 3.1 million trout in Pennsylvania lakes and streams. An additional 1 million trout will be stocked by cooperative nurseries, according to the PFBC website.
Among the millions of trout stocked there will be a number of “trophy” trout, measuring 14 to 20 inches, with 70% of these trout being stocked prior to opening day.
Opening day for trout season in Pennsylvania is set for April 1, with a single, statewide Mentored Youth Trout Day scheduled for March 25. Anglers are instructed not to fish in waters designated as “stocked trout waters” from Feb. 21 to opening day, with the exception of the Mentored Youth Trout Day, unless waters are part of the Year-Round Fishing program.
