When Horace Mann made his great promises about publicly-funded education he claimed the system would “save [Americans] from poverty and vice” and that “nine-tenths of the penal code would become obsolete.” He called “the common school…the greatest discovery ever made by man.” And yet, the message many are sending about the government schools in Pennsylvania, and across the nation, is that they have failed. Parents, who have come to rely on taxpayer founded centers of indoctrination are now wondering if they can indeed count on the government to educate their children. Some Republicans are touting School choice as a key part of the solution to America’s education problems.
